Resonating Sculptures Background/Process |
Sound Sculptures are centuries old and have taken the form of bells, gongs, drums, music boxes, musical instruments and religious symbols. They have been made of wood, pottery, metals and even glass. Basically they work by something striking them and the vibration caused produces a sound. The motion to produce the sounds have been created by hand, springs, clock mechanisms, gravity, flowing water and wind. They have been used for meditation, relaxation, pleasure and amazement, not only for their sounds, but also for the visual movement of the sculptures. Interior or exterior they range in size from fitting in the hand to over 30 feet tall. |
Mr. McDaniel already sees new visions for the genre of sounding sculptures or what he calls “resonating sculptures”. His imagination and knowledge of forging metals will clearly make these unique sculptures that are full of life. As seen below, using brass and bronze, forge-brazed onto steel is already a novel approach to his work and is only the beginning of him incorporating his knowledge of forging with the fabrication of these sculptures.

Some of Mr. McDaniel’s first resonating sculptures. These are bells forged out of steel pipe to form the dresses. Both have legs that hang loose for the clapper. Again a place for Randy to use his punny humor. |
